To use FoCal you’ll have to print out a QR-code-looking target and hang it on your wall. This is why I decided to invest the $35 into buying a copy of FoCal Standard semi-automated focus calibration software. You could always shoot tethered to LR to view your adjustments in real-time but that has its own issues. While there are manual options to AF micro adjust, they can be tough to interpret when you’re making decisions based upon the sharpness of a picture on the back screen. Immediately though, I noticed a lot of my images were grabbing focus on eyelashes rather than the eye itself, leaving the eyes slightly OOF. While I typically shot portraits at either f/2 and f/2.5 I figured buying a 1.4 and not shooting it wide open was like buying a Ferrari and only driving it to and from Starbucks. So if you are looking for a good way to get your MA adjustments taken care of, especially if you have a Canon body that supports the automatic calibration mode - I agree with the OP - you should buy this software.About a month back, I traded in my trusty 85mm f/1.8 for the Nikon flagship portrait lens, the 85 f1.4G. The customer service was very good and they were able to help me get everything straightened out in very short order. One other thing - I originally had an issue with the license when I bought the upgrade (due to a computer problem I was having). Once Nikon makes the necessary function calls available to third party software developers, I expect this program can add the automatic functionality that is already supported for many of the Canon bodies. There is not quite as good support for some of the functions on Nikon bodies, but that is the fault of the lack of support for remote controlling some of the functions of the cameras that Nikon makes available to developers, not any fault of the program itself. I now want to go back and run some of the other statistics and tests (like sharpest aperture) that the Pro version gives you. After seeing how excellent and easy it was to use I upgraded to the Pro version. I originally had the middle version (that allows for the automatic calibration) but not the Pro version. I have calibrated both my 70-200 f/4 L IS and my 24-105 f/4 L IS with it and I am pleased with the values of MA that it came up with, which was much easier than the original testing I did without the software trying to set my MA adjustment values myself.
I bought the system about 2 months ago - and I agree - it is a very cool piece of software and I think it gives accurate repeatable results.
